Hi Doug, You should be A-OK!
Make sure the surface of the varnished mahogany is well-sanded. Sand with some 120 grit until there are no remaining glossy areas.
I did this on the foredeck of my Chesapeake 17. The hull was okoume, but I decked it with lauan doorskins. The upward pressure from my knees when rolling was cracking the deck. I sanded the epoxy/varnish smooth, laid on some 6 oz. glass, feathered out the edges, and re-varnished it, and it looks great. No problems with peeling.
