Greg,
My wife still drives her 11 year old Golf with 175,000 miles. We talk about getting something else, but she likes it and it doesn't have any problems, it just keeps running great. It was a replacement for a '67 bug with over 300,000 miles.
I don't use the Golf for kayak hauling though, I've got a newer S-10 that I run around in.
