My CLC hatches are not completely watertight, but I've had no problem with them in the surf. They don't loosen up or come off. As long as my gear is in dry bags it's fine and there is no danger of flooding a compartment in the kayak.

I've come closer to sinking a kayak in the surf when a VCP hatch got clawed off during a rescue. Still, if I wanted watertight, I'd install the VCP hatches. (And I did on my second boat)
