Hi Chris,
I bought my Sandvik carbide scraper in Home Depotin the tool area. It is has a cast aluminum frame with a good size [orange] rubber molded handle. There is also a two-handed model available that I saw at the Lee Valley store.
One of the reasons the clerks may not know what you are looking for is because it is not a "cabinet scraper" it is really a "paint scraper". You are not likely to find a cabinet scraper in a "construction materials" store like Home Depot.
A real "cabinet scraper" is a thin sheet of steel (typically rectangular 4x6 inches or so in size) that has a special hook or burr burnished on to the edge. A cabinet scraper is very useful in working on kayaks [especially strippers]. I made a couple of mine out of an old handsaw blade. You can typically buy cabinet scrapers from stores like Lee Valley Tools that specifically sell wood working/carving tools.
It is worth while looking for a carbide bladed scraper if you are making kayaks - they do a heck of a job on epoxy, saves a lot of sanding.
Hope this helps.
Hank
