I too use the staple holes as a guide for measuring. that is probably the most accurate measurement you have anyhow. Your boat probably varies slightly form the design due to strip thickness, how you decided to trim the ends of the strips etc.

The reality of the situation is that the exact location of the bulkheads is not all that critical as long as your feet fit. If you put the bulkheads closer to the cockpit, you make a smaller volume to pump out if you swamp.
