Thanks Brian, Although I don't think you'd say that if you could see the first few strips I placed on the hull! The ends matched up poorly, had pretty big gaps between strips, and I was still perfecting a scarfing technique....I'm glad only the fishes will see that part!!
There's definitely a learning curve on strip kayaks, but it is a nice challenge after you get stitch & glue boats figured out. I recognize all of the comments on this post from the S&G builders. That was me a year ago... > "Man, I wish I was working on a strip boat!!"
I don't think I'll ever do another all-stitched boat. I am thinking of doing a stitched hull with a stripped deck. Doing the hull of a stripper, while good practice, gets boring. I think it would be fun to quickly knock out a S&G hull and then take plenty of time on the deck. I've started daydreaming about ways to merge the two styles together at the sheerline, like cutouts in the side panels that would be later filled with strips.
