Hi David,
I agree with Paul - you are doing fine, not to worry.
Just wanted to mention that I like to use a carbide bladed scraper to cleanup the drips and feather the edge of the tape to the hull.
The scraper works well on [cured and partially cured "green"] epoxy and does not raise a cloud of dust.
A scraper is an agressive tool but you can do real fine work with it. Start slow and easy until you get used to it. There is [typically] a slight rocker on the blade - use that profile to control the cut.
