Actually, it sort of depends on your vehicle. A friend of mine has a Yakima rack on his Ford Mustang. He has the saddles (no rollers), and he doesn't have a problem. He just walks up to the car, and drops the boat onto the saddles. With my 1989 Chevy Blazer (full-size), dropping the boat onto saddles is not an option. Even with someone else helping me, it is still too tall for us to just set the boat in place. So I purchased the "sweet roll", which consists of a roller on one end (the front) and a saddle on the other. This makes loading quite easy, even without assistance.

So in the case of the Mustang, the roller would be a "luxury", but for the Blazer it is a necessity.
