Is R for Rotary or Random?

In Response To: ROS vs Sheet Sanders (Paul Willliams)
All this time I thought ROS stood for Random Orbital Sander. Now, following this thread, I'm starting to suspect it means Rotary Orbital Sander. The latter would make sense with the round sanding discs. I always thought it was body shop copy cat gimick as I thought the round electric units used the same motion as the rectangular ones. Would one of you guys care to make the clarification to me?
