After some time to mull it over I realized my memory let me down. Some corrections to my previous post....

I sprayed the outside after using pro-poxy resin for the layup. I did indeed fill the weave for a smooth surface on the outside, then painted. It was on the inside that I did the layup with the paint, and allowed the texture of the weave to remain. It gave a nice none-skid surface, but did collect dirt.
