Great idea! -- so great, in fact, that Jay Babina includes it in the instructions for building his Outer Island kayak ;-) Not to take the wind out of your sails, because you get credit for evolving this technique in parallel. I used it building my Outer Island, and it worked great. Better than trying to roll a sloppy coil of wetted tape down the shear, at least.
