Ross,
The strips down the center 10" or so of the boat run out in the cockpit. This made stripping with the detail strips much easier. I only had to assemble about 8' lenghts. Outside of the walnut half-strips, though, the strips had to be tortured into place.
Jay's design lends itself more to variations on straight strips. Doing some of the swoopy designs that we've seen on Guillemot and Redfish kayaks would be tough.
