I don't know if an additive would help. I'm hoping the coating is so resistant to moisture that any additives would simply be encapsulated in a rubberized coating, and not available to kill the mildew. I think pretreating the fabric with a mildew-resistant coating might be the trick, though.

I would normally dampen the material to shrink it tight before painting it. Next time I'll try adding some borax to the water I use for the preliminary shrinking. Maybe a couple tablespoons to a gallon of water. Enough should soak into the fabric, and remain there, to give some mildew resistance, without affecting the adhesion of the caoting.

Borax is readily available in the laundry area at the local grocery stores. When diluted it seems to have little toxicity problems to people, pets or lawns -- although mildew hates it -- and above all it is cheap. Dumping handfulls of the powder directly on the lawn will kill your grass, so if I was using this with young children, I'd mix the stuff in a bucket of water myself.

I may try some borax, bleach, and auto antifreeze on different areas of the uncoated interior of the boat. I'll use each of these items individually, NOT mixed together! If any of these clear up the staining I'll let you know. Otherwise, I'll just paint over it.
