In Response To: RAKA questions (Tom Kurth)

: Been saving my penneys and nickels and am about to order enough glass and
: resin to do about three boats. Have some questions: 1) I've decided to
: take the frame I built for the18'5" Walrus and cover it with
: 1/8" luaun and lightweight glass. For paddling in quiet waters should
: I be OK to resin the inside and glassing the outside with a single layer
: of 2.3 ot 3.75 oz. cloth? What weight and type of tape should I use for
: the seams?

: 2) The later boats will be strip-built in all likelihood. Which RAKA resin
: and hardener are appropriate if I want a clear coat and I don't want to
: have to deal with blushing problems?

: 3) Will RAKA products be compatible with leftover West System resin and
: glass?

: Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom,

I came across a new web site (well, maybe it's not new , but it was new to me!) last week. The guy had done some test panels using various epoxies. the purpose of the test was to check for finish quality mostly, but interesting nonetheless... check the site out at www.oneoceankayaks.com The Raka 350 product did well for his testing. He mentioned that it is very slow to set up and I suppose that it is. I used it on my canoe, but I've yet to use any other product, so I've nothing for comparison. I have used small batches of West System and I like the two to one mix ratio of Raka better. The Raka is very clear and pretty thin for good wet out also. Hope this helps, garland
