Hey Bailey, You could also consider building with a lower grade of marine okoume.
The BS 1088 okoume that everybody uses can run around $45 for a 4'x8' 4mm sheet. It has an A-grade face and an AA face. I think BS 6566 is around $30. It has a A face and a B face. The face plies aren't quite as pretty, but they're as pretty or more pretty than doorskins, and guaranteed to be durable in a marine environment.
Check Boulter or Noah's marine.

: After doing research I think I am going to try and build a kayak out of
: lauan. One thing that I'm not clear on though is the references to
: exterior grade lauan. I have read about it on this board and in "The
: Kayak Shop." In calling lumber yards and looking at Home Depot and
: Lowe's all I can come up with is the standard 1/4" and 1/8"
: doorskin but these don't have an exterior rating. Will these be sufficient
: or am I missing something?
: Thanks Bailey--
