: From past experiences with isocyanates in the workforce: 1. Sensitivity is a
: genetic issue, some people have better genes. Life can change if you
: happen to be the poor individual that was on the wrong end. Just because
: George didn't have a problem, is no guarantee that you won't. Roll the
: dice.
Eventually isocyanates will affect everyone who comes in contact. Strong genes mean longer exposure but eventually it gets them all.
: 2. The "ANY" above is relative, depends upon your tolerance for an
: inability to breath or not be concerned with chemical burns (direct
: physical contact) that look like someone has been using you to put out
: cigarettes.
I know several people with isocyanate poisoning caused by the WCB saying chemical cartridge respirators where appropriate protection. They were not and these people can not tolerate any exposure to isocyanates. If they come in the shop the day after a car is painted they have immediate problems. HEY!!! They could hire themselves out as isocyanate warning alarms. They would need a label that reads, "If you find Joe lying on the floor, evacuate area immediately."
: Always minimize your contact. The time between cause and effect isn't as
: quick as with guns and bullets. Acceptable levels of exposure to chemicals
: (OSHA) always seem to decrease, not increase, over time.
Yes, you will become sensitized and unable to stand further exposure. It is like lead poisoning, once it is in your system there is no way for your body to clean it out so it just keeps building up until you reach your tolerance level.
