in my building adventures I ussualy just duct tape the hose from my shop vac right next the the blade or sanding surface of whatever tool I'm using. it picks up most of the dust... if you can do your sanding with one hand free hold the end of your shop vac VERY close to where you are sanding and move it around to try and catch as much dust as possible. also if you wet the walls and the floor it will keep the dust out of the air.

what could be interesting to keep smells down is to build a plastic "room" out of cheep 1X1'z and plast sheeting. you could leave oine end loose and have it be hinged so it would break down into smaller parts. you could even mount an exaust fan/hose that you could just leave running out a window.
