hang in there Greg, that "tippiness" after awhile will become responsiveness as you get used to being in the thing. Having a cozy seat,hip,thigh braces will go a long way towards being able to control the boat.

A good outfitting will make it easier to control/steer the kayak since it is through that connection of your lower torso that the blade/water works. Also becoming comfortable with leaning the kayak will go a long way towards being able to turn it.
