I use quarter-sawn western red cedar on most of my "cruising" paddles and enjoy the light weight but a storm paddle by definition should be very stout and strong. For a storm paddle I prefer to use quarter-sawn douglas fir or sitka spruce (if you can find it). You might also get some good ideas for woods suitable for creating a laminated blade from the "strippers" on the list.
