: I know I'm asking for it, but here is my question anyway: When I ran about a
: cup short of wood flour in building my kayak, the folks at MAS said that
: clean sawdust might do in a pinch as homemade wood flour. In a posting by
: Lee on CLC's forum, he mentioned whole wheat flour as a filler/thickener
: (not in a good way). I'm no engineer, and not even much of a boatbuilder,
: but would it work?

yes wood flour works great... if you are worried about strienghth,.,, I just wanna say that I built my yare with 2 layers of 10 oz 4 inch glass tape on the inside of the hull and one on the outside. that is just three layers of glass going down the keel line. there is no other glass in the entire boat. I epoxyed the deck on and used bleached flour as a filler on the entire boat. I coated the plywood "1/8th inch $8 dollar luan plywood" with one coat of epoxy on each side, painted the bottom and varnished the deck... I'v now been using it for 2 seasons... and the only problems are at the shear line. otherwise the boat has held together perfectly. "oh did I mention it weighs 25 pounds" I have side surfed it in 5 foot breakers... I'v piroueted it in large waves... and it leaks a bit... but not enough to constitute putting glass on the shear line. this upcoming winter I'm goiong to break down and do it... go for the wood flour if you can get it, but regular flour works well also.

oh and all you over builders out there... u are really missing out on having a boat that you can carry for 3 miles and not have a soar shoulder ;) hehe Just kidding my boat is probabl;y the most unsafe thing in the world... "no bulkheads or hatches" just a solid carved minicell seat and hip pads... a backband and foot pegs... what else could you ask for? ;)

ok I'm done
