: I have a small truck with a small cab (Dodge Dakota Sport). I have a rather
: long boat and have not been able to find anything to accomidate it. I want
: some sort of rack to put my boat on to leave the bed of the truck for
: other things (ie. paddles, gear, camping equipment). Any ideas or
: suggestions most welcome!
I just purchased a used toyota truck and had the same delima. Your local builders supply(lowes was my choice) has a large selection of galvanized pipe in the plumbing section. i made a rack with various fittings and 3/4 inch galvanied pipe that is attached to the inside of the bed with ratchet straps. only 2 pieces had to be custom cut and threaded to accomidate the width of the bed. Lowes did this for me at no cost and had a machine inside just for this purpose. My rack consisted of 4 2 foot lengths with end caps on one end for the legs. at the top of each was attached a T fitting with a six inch piece attached to the top of the T. 90 degree elbows were threaded to the 6 inch piece to attach the crossbars. at this point i had 2 end assemblies that resembled a letter M without the middle leg. into each T i attached a 3 foot piece and placed each half into the bed of the truck with the unattached ends pointing towards each other. A UNION was used to attach both halves together. The union allows for assembly/ disassembly of the entire unit. Total cost @45 dollars. And it stores in the basement when not needed. I have purchased 4 turnbuckles and 4 eye bolts to use to attach to truck next time i need it. The eye bolts will be attached to the legs with one end of the turnbuckles hooked to the eyes and the other hooked to the factory installed loops at each corner that are inside the bed. Turn the turnbuckles to tighten. First trip i used it involved a 250 one way trip to Fontana lake in western NC. held 2 canoes and 2 kayaks without incident and the bed was filled with other camping gear and firewood. Fell free to e-mail with any questions.
