My coaming lip is 12 laminations of 1/16" x 1/4" maple and mahogany. The innermost strips (against the coaming riser) are slightly larger to form a wood fillet under the coaming lip.

I started out doing one lamination in the morning and one in the evening, but it got too tedious, so I started doing 2 laminations at a time after lamination #8. It was still very tedious. I think next time I'll skip the 1/16" veneer as a lip material and rip my own 1/8" stock like everybody else uses.

Not saying that mine is better, but bragging that it was more tedious and I was more foolish!

Happy Building,

Shawn

: Pete, Having just finished the same step on my Expedition. I will say, I
: prefer the glass the deck first approach. Last week I asked about the
: coaming laminations and got some great ideas. I recut my laminations to
: 5/16"X 1/8" from the 1/2" wide ones I had originally cut.
: This was the width Ross said he used. To make things go easier, I
: installed one lamination per day. I cold bent the strips around the
: coaming (dry) and made one butt joint one each strip. I let the strip stay
: clamped for an hour or so, removed the clamps and reinstalled it with the
: thickened epoxy and lots of clamps alternating one c-clamp and one spring
: clamp. I cleaned off excess epoxy and waited till the next day to do it
: all over again. It took 5 days to get my 5/8" coaming lip but they
: are all even and gap free.
