recovering from a poorly aligned scarf joint

I used West epoxy to join two pieces end to end with a scarf joint (3/4 inch by 3/4" cross-section, 3" long scarf). Unfortunately during cure the clamp fell off and the joint is now off center. I was told by the kitmaker that if I used a heat gun I could remove the epoxy. I was able to remove the surface epoxy but not able to separate the joint.

Should I use a coping saw to attempt to cut along the lines of the scarf and then rejoin?

Other techniques?

Thanks for your help.
