certainly is a lively discusion! I have a different view so I will throw in my two cents. I personally wear a Serratus and many friends have them or the Palm vests which are popular around here. Even though they are not approved vests I feel they are safer as I can carry flares and other safety gear on my person, where I may need it. I do not go out of my way to avoid the Coast Guard, I have stopped to talk with them several times. They are happy enough to see people actually wearing their PFD, that they not going to stop you or question whether it is approved. Twice they have commented on my PFD as it is bright orange with yellow pockets! They are either not aware that some vests are not approved or they dont care if you are actually wearing it (alot of people dont around here). I think your vest is great and if you have made it more servicable for yourself! I would not really worry about CG approval. This may vary from area to area but I wouldn't worry.
