I built a Georgian Bay and Rob had 2 cockpit patterns on the plans, large & small - The small was 33" x 18" so I presume the large was intended for a recess - It looks about perfectly sized for that. Wonder if that's part of your plans as well.

As to "coolness" - I will take the opposite side and state that I think the upward swoop of the coaming on a non-recessed cockpit looks pretty great as well. The GB is so shallow behind the cockpit I don't think much paddling comfort could be gained with a recess . . . ;-)
