I used Purpleheart for the outside stem on a Hiawatha canoe. It's very hard and very hard to bend. The Hiawatha has more traditional roundish ends and I had to cut it into 3/32 strip to get it to make the curve. 1/8 probably would have done, as well. Very hard. It's color under resin and varnish is great tho, a deep dark red.
