The wind would have to be able to get under the hatch to be able to blow it off, which is tough with our flush hatches. Blowing across it isn't going to provide enough lift even at highway speeds. Plus, a thin layer of air down at the surface of your kayak (or car) is moving at the same speed as the car. Next time you hang your arm out the window, stick it straight out, then stick it straight down along the car. You will notice much less wind with your hand on the door...
