Hi Don,

The lip on my Guillemot is about 3/16" x 3/4". Nothing is going to come off accidentally.

It depends more on the type of sprayskirt you are using. Look at commercial boats. The big neoprene, rubber randed sprayskirts are necessary to stay on the big fat radiused coamings of plastic sea kayaks and rodeo boats. The really slim, vacuum-bagged coamings found on glass and kevlar boats hold a nylon/bungeed sprayskirt well.

If you put a nylon/bungeed sprayskirt on that plastic, radiused coaming, it's probably gonna pop off. If you use the neoprene skirt on a deep, sharp coaming, it's never gonna come off (make sure you can get it off when it really counts!)

While most of our wooden coamings fit somewhere in between these two extremes, I wanted to use them to illustrate the point.

If your current sprayskirt is not coming off of your current coaming, even when you have a wave wash over the deck, don't worry about it--just go paddling. If you start seeking bigger water and have bigger waves, you might need a beefier connection.

: Your 1/8" is my 3/8", the thickness of the lip. Your 3/4" is
: my 1/2", the width if you will. I kind of like the beefy look... The
: question is, is 1/2" enough? The skirt stays on fine, I can almost
: pick the boat up and it pops off.
