Forgive me for being out of the loop, but what were the conceivable benefits of using polyester resin as a varnish substitute? Isn't poly resin inferior to epoxy resin as far as it's relative strengths (poor maleabiltity, brittleness,poor surface hardness' etc.) are concerned? And wouldn't you still need to provide UV protection lest you rename your kayak the "Milky Way"?
