Bill, I discovered the same thing while doing rescue practice in my Tern. Totally unsatisfactory. I bought 6 side release buckles from REI, best price around on that item, and replaced the Pygmy buckles. Works like a charm, only problem is that one strap has to be shortened and the end redone. Looks much better than original. Leave the half dowels on the hatch covers, they help seal. I stole the idea from my CLC West River 180. Happy Trails, Dave
