In Response To: Why we build (Larry C.)

Hi Larry;

Your description of the strongback you built sounds neat. Is there a chance you will have any photos up for us to look at? I definitely want to replace the external plywood monster I built for the first kayak.

As to staples, my opinions are those of a woodworker, not as a boatbuilder . . . I saw this project as a kind of tubular would-be cabinetmaker's dream. ;-) And staples are just not part of that formula.

Several years ago I saw a magazine that featured pics of a house that was finished on the interior with strip construction, just like we build the 'yaks. Strip tables rose smoothly out of the stripped floor, as did seats, and well, just about everything. It looked awesome. I now have 17' x 2' of the same thing in my garage, and it's portable to boot! I think there's a subconscious connection there somewhere . . .

We have to continue the alliance that exists between woodworkers and boatbuilders, as we try to accomplish the same goal, but from two different perspectives, IMO. Both work remarkably well, and provide lots of fun "garage time." My comments as regards staples are only directed to the wannabe cabinet makers amongst us, as boatbuilders will even pour concrete hulls for crying out loud! [VBG (Very Big Grin!)]

Best Regards, Spidey
