If you make it exactly 4 1/4" X 22", you fit an 8 1/2 X 11 inch sheet of paper cut in half. I started with 60 grit at an angle to the grain, then with the grain, followed by 80 and 100. I used 1/4" luan which seems to flexible enough to fair the chines and get in some mildly concave parts, but stiff enough to sand the tops off bumps. Contact cement lets me peel off used paper, but the wood is cheap enough that I have used glue and then chucked the used boards.
