I agree with everyone that the designer should be paid. However, I agree with Eric that $80 is a stiff price for a set of plans. I am sure that is one reason a lot of people choose to build the guillemot from the offsets provided in the book.I don't understand why designers don't offer their plans as autocad or document files of offsets and building instructions.This would save the printing and delivery costs, as well as the time waiting for a set of plans to arrive,since they could simply be emailed. Another advantage of this form of plan would be the ease of modifying it to accomodate big feet etc.
I am considering building a sailboat after I finish the guillemot I am currently working on. In comparison, sailboat plans are typically $20 to $40 for the type of boats I have looked at (15-20' plywood), half the cost of kayak plans.
