The reason for squeegeeing (sp?) is to have the fiberglass cloth make contact with the wood. You don't want the cloth to be floating off the surface, comprimizing all that sanding and fairing work. You can certainly use it as a spreader , which I do as well. but it's real function is to remove the excess resin that accumulates under the weave after you give it some time to saturate the cloth and/or wood.
