Another Putz quandry :-) Since I was using the A. Tern cockpit and the two boats are the same length, I did a measurement to the back of the cockpit on my Tern. This turned out to be with an inch or so of Putz's measurements (Sorry, I don't recall the numbers right now. The ones posted here so far seem familiar). The Tern cockpit is 33-34" long inside, BTW. I went with the Tern measurments. I'll let you know later tonite what they were when I get home. I think I would base any measurements on the back of the cockpit, though, since that is where the weight sits (literally ! :-) Mike's idea of using another "known" boat as a guide is an excellent one. No need to reinvent the wheel. So, just go down to your local kayak dealer with a tape measure and ... ignore the strange looks :-)
