Tom, you might want to check your local library or online for the following books.

  • Wood and Canvas Kayak Building by George Putz
George details how to build the Skin-On-Frame Walrus. This kayak is an updated design that is still very traditional. Type in Walrus in this web site’s search engine and you’ll find a lot of talk about the Walrus.

  • The Aleutian Kayak: Origins, Construction, and Use of the Traditional Seagoing Baidarka by Wolfgang Brinck
This book covers building a very traditional Skin-On-Frame Baidarka. This is a beautiful boat. It also goes into the anthropological end of kayak building. Also, the size of the boat is determined by body measurements. Some of the supplies are gathered by hand (ribs made of willow or fruit tree suckers. When your done, you’ll not only have a sea worthy and capable kayak, but a historical artifact.

  • The Kayak Shop : Three Elegant Wooden Kayaks Anyone Can Build
    by Chris Kulczycki
I have not built a Stitch-N-Glue kayak yet so I can’t talk much on the subject. But I have looked at this book and it seems to be sound.

  • Also check:
10 Wooden Boats You Can Build : For Sail, Motor, Paddle and Oar (The Woodenboat Series)
    by Peter H. Spectre
This and Three Wooden Boats are packed with S&G info.

I didn’t mention any of the Strip built boat books since you seem to be steering away from these.
Happy researching :D

Roger

Forget Putz for tradition or space.
