FWIIW: Cypress is known for expanding substantially in the presence of water which it will take on in large quantities. That is why historically it has been used for wooden water tanks, centerboard trunks, etc (seals up the leaks between the planks). It does not hold paint well because it soaks up water like a sponge. It is very resistant to rot.
