You probably only "need" the block plane if you are building from plans. The kits come pre-scarfed.

I think you probably made the right decision in terms of your new kayak. It will definitely still be pretty when you are finished. The Chesapeakes are probably a bit more sleek looking - similar to looking at a luxury sedan compared to say a nifty sports car.

Purchasing based on intended use is a very good idea obviously. I do take some photography from my Chessapeake 18 yak (mainly scenics and action type stuff) using my Nikon N70 usually loaded with Velvia or Provai film and do find it abit twitchy especially when craming around to get a shot. Turning the longer length boats in smaller waters is also a bigger pain too and you can't get them into all spaces either for lining up the perfect picture.
