Spidey, what about something as straightforward as covering the seat with a nice looking and durable canvas, perhaps sunbrella or a fabric of equal quality. It might be done by using spray-on adhesive (the kind available in auto stores for headliner and similar materials). The contours of the seat might require some work with the fabric (akin to cutting or sewing in some darts), but otherwise, I think it could be done relatively simply. Nothing I've tried, but a thought...
