Paul:
I purchased a number of 10' and 9' foot planks. They were 5/4 and 4/4 planks, the owner of the mill...Will...planed them down to 3/4 for me. All were about 5" wide...however I purchsed Northern White Cedar because it is the lightest of all suggested kayak building woods. He also has Atlantic White Cedar at some longer lengths. I would suggest you give him a call. My impression is that if he doesn't have what you want he might be able to get it for you.
My understanding is that the differences between Northern White, Atlantic White and Western Red Cedar, are the obvious color shades available and their weithts with Northern White being the lightest(relatively speaking). I am pretty sure there is a thread in the archives regarding the relative weights of recommended woods.
Good luck with the boat....send in a picture when done...sounds great.
Bob
What lengths were you able to get? I was thinking of the possibility of doing
: an Aleutian kayak from Brincks book, which calls for preferably two
: 1x8x16ft vertical grain (quarter sawn), or possibly plain-sawn planks.
: Actually, he calls for red cedar. Any major difference between Red Cedar and
: Northern or Atlantic White Cedar?
: Thanks, Paul
