Making special tools is a fun part of boat building. I have made specialized planes, knives chisels etc for my model work in particular.
It caan also be useful to modify existing tools. Nick and I use a blockplane modified with a convex sole (with a blade gound into a curve) for smoothing the inside of kayaks and hollow shapes on the outside near the bow and stern.

: In the work I use to do we had to make many our own specialized tools. One
: was a curved knife with a three inch blade. I was using different types of
: scrapers to remove the glue after it had set from hard to rubbery,
: depending on the drip size when I pick up this knife and started scraping.
: It was much better then anything I had tried. It got into corners, the
: concave of the inside haul and cleaned up the outside really nice.
: I want to thank all of you for getting me into the really exciting hobby of
: strip kayak building. I read all of the posts everyday and I am learning
: as I go.
: Thank you.
