The book says to use an epoxy type glue and a screw in each joint. On my last one, I used polyurethane glue and screws for the most part. But used epoxy where more strength was required or the pieces didn't match perfectly. The weight of the screws is very minimal, so don't eliminate them just to save weight. The do help hold everything together while the glue dries, but also act as a backup to the glue. Rehd's idea of dowelling the joints sounds good, but also sounds like more work. The screws are quick and easy.

Epoxy used as glue adds to the strength. Used as a sealant it may help the joints some, but I prefer other methods of sealing, and I also like to use rot resistant wood (western red cedar). If you seal with epoxy and miss a spot, water can get in the wood, but can only get out where there is no epoxy. This creates a prime condition for rot to start.
