If you made the pumping mechanism separate from the footpegs--foot pedals for pump just inboard of footpegs, you would lose no bracing abilities, and it wouldn't mess with your rudder.

: your feet to pump. Get leverage, maximum efficiency(no fighting against
: return springs) and don't have to move feet.
