I had heard about the step scarf, but haven't seen it yet.

The spline joints are done with a 3/32" kerf small circular saw blade mounted on a shaper. Always keep the outside of the panels up, and make sure you have good finger boards holding it down. Cut the spline from 3/32" plywood, and you have an icredible joint. It holds well even without glue.

P.S. have you looked at Pygmy's AT 14 page yet. On the bottom there is a report from some yahoo who did a solo outing in storm conditions off a dangerous point in a kayak that he wasn't used to. Some people are so foolish.
