Platt Monfort's system uses a heat activated glue tape called heat-n-bond. It is normally used with fabric and clothes, but seems to do fine with Dacron/polyester on boats. It comes with a paper backing and is ironed onto the wood, usually the gunwales and keel. The paper is then pealed away and the dacron is ironed onto the exposed tape. Similar techniques can be used for overlapping pieces of dacron.
