I bet it would work, the cloth being pretty strong relative to the slender frame members. Monfort says to lay the cloth on the diagonal, but that's corner-to-corner of a long rectangle of fabric. To get a +/-45deg lay you would have to have seams. Easier to use the kevlar. Besides, Kevlar has other benefits; when people say the boat looks too delicate to get into, you can point to the Kevlar and they calm down.
