I now have about 1/4" shorter thumb, and they had to do a skin graft to repair.
Hell of a way to out yourself. Don't feel bad, this one usually gets even experienced woodworkers. I'll even admit to having nicked a thumb this way. The rule, of course is never put your hand beyond the blade. Factory guards will not always prevent this type of injury. You're safest course is a cutting setup with losts of high quality featherboards or similar hold-downs.
However, I wouldn't give up on that thumb yet. No medical back ground mind you, but I've noticed that unless you shorten the bone, the tip of a finger will usually regenerate. I mauled the tip of the middle finger on my left hand by firmly grasping a the base of a trim router forgetting that the base is smaller than my standard router. A round over bit at 20,000 rpm is no way to clean your nails. By the time the nail grew back it was pretty well back to normal. So I can still give the cabby's salute. A friend shorted the same finger with electric hedge clippers and it regenerated too.
