: Eddyline sells Methyl Merthacrylate in their Carbonlite repair kits--this
: might be a good adhesive to consider. You can use methyl merthacryate as a
: resin and actually use it to wet-out fiberglass to bond to the Lexan. I
: don't know if it's available in clear versions, so you might want to check
: out solvents if you want the joint to be perfectly clear. They seem to use
: methyl merthacryate to bond their hull and deck together, glue on
: coamings, glue in bulkheads, and glue in skeg boxes.
Methyl methacrylate is a good adhesive for this type of application, high in strength and low in viscosity. It is a 3-part mix, with resin, catalyst (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) and promoter (a cobalt compound). Most retail resins are prepromoted with cobalt, which imparts a distinctly purplish cast to the mix. Some folks might object to splotchy purple on their gorgeous wood boats...
Sidebar: Back in the '80s when this stuff first hit the specialty construction market, all three components came separately. The thing was, if you mixed them in the wrong order, the product was potentially explosive. Ergo, you can't get the unpromoted resin, throttle back on the cobalt and mellow out the color.
If you want an alternative material with similar properties but no purple (apologies to my UW Husky friends), try vinyl ester.
