In Response To: Glass Kayak (Johnnie)

I've lurked for months but I have to respond to this one.

My boss isn't happy about this thread - I've spent too much time considering the ramifications today! In a former life I worked with vaccu-molded Plexiglas for helicopter canopies. I wouldn't even think of investing that kind of time and effort! On the other hand, building one based on S&G plans should be simpler than doing one out of plywood, fiberglas, epoxy, varnish... Most tools and techniques would be interchangeable.

My concerns center around the coefficient of expansion issues that Paul Jacobson mentioned. Any bulkheads would need to be flexible (foam?). A bigger issue for the desert-based paddlers would be the green-house effect - perhaps resolved with window tinting on the inside of the deck. Another would be visibility from other boats, especially PWC. None the less, I think it's is a very viable concept.
