In Response To: Question about trucking a sailboat (Russ)

I had a 26' San Juan, that I bought in Bellingham and pulled to Portland on a trailer that the dealer had, with a borrowed truck. I made it 5 miles before having to go back and block the boat correctly. 35 MPH all the way home. I'll NEVER do that again.

Dont hold me to these numbers; if your boat is ready to go - crated - and not including loading or unloading, I know from working with fans and dust collectors that a "contract haul" across the country is in the neighborhood of $2500 - 3000. Quite a bit more if it is oversize (over 8' wide or 14'-6" high, loaded) and requires permits. The price fluctuates quite a bit, by the fuel cost and the trucker's backlog. Also, insurance will add to that number, and you want it insured. I can fill your ears with horror stories of damaged freight and denied claims.

I'd suggest somebody who specializes in boats, tho they may charge more. They know what they are doing. If any ol' trucker will do, we have had good luck (contrary to others) with "brokers"; contract haul companies who hire drivers out. They are usually cheapest. Middle of the road, go with somebody like Yellow Freight. We have good luck with them damage-wise also. Call them, tell them what you want and get a quote. I think it's 1-800-yellow or something like that.

And again, get the insurance, unless you already dont have any hair left to tear out in frustration. Good Luck!

: Hey I need a litle help. I am wondering if anyone could give me a rough round
: figure for what it would cost to truck a 28 foot sailboat from CA to NH.
: The boat is already crated and would just have to be lifted onto a flat
: bed. No fin keel 9 foot beam.

: I have an option to restore and deliver it. But I have to figure out what it
: would cost to get it to me. I can see two options. I have a CDL so I could
: rent one. But one way rentals tend to be pretty high. Or I could just pay
: to have it proffesionally trucked. However, I don't know whata coast to
: coast would run me. Can any of you blow boaters help me out?

: Thanks in advance
